FREE LOCAL JPEG METADATA CLEANER

Remove EXIF metadata from JPG/JPEG photos online

Inspect and remove supported EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC/Photoshop-style metadata and JPEG comments. MetWipe creates a separate cleaned copy while retaining the encoded JPEG image data, avoiding another lossy JPEG recompression pass.

Local processing

The supported JPEG workflow runs in your browser and does not require the photo to be sent to an application processing server.

Verify the copy

After cleaning, scan the downloaded copy again. Verification is more useful than assuming a successful download means every targeted field is gone.

Keep the original

Your source photo is not overwritten. MetWipe generates a separate file so you can keep the original metadata when needed.

Check before you clean

If you only want to inspect a photo, use the free EXIF viewer. To specifically investigate coordinates, use the photo GPS/location checker guide. A file may contain camera model, timestamps or other EXIF fields without containing GPS.

What metadata removal does not do

Metadata cleanup does not redact visible faces, addresses, documents, street signs, reflections or landmarks in the pixels. It also does not prove who created a photo or where it originated. Review supported formats and limitations before relying on the result.

EXIF removal questions

Does removing EXIF reduce JPEG image quality?

The current supported JPEG cleaner removes targeted metadata segments while copying the encoded image data rather than decoding and recompressing the picture.

Can EXIF contain a photo's location?

Yes, some files contain GPS coordinates, but many do not. Whether GPS exists depends on the device, settings and processing history of the specific file.

Can I view metadata without removing it?

Yes. Use the MetWipe EXIF viewer to inspect supported fields before deciding whether to clean the file.

Does removing metadata hide visible location clues?

No. Metadata and visible image content are different. Signs, landmarks and addresses visible in the image require separate editing or redaction.
