METWIPE PRIVACY GUIDE

What Are ID3 Tags?

ID3 is a metadata system commonly used with MP3 audio files. It allows descriptive information to travel with the audio independently of the sound itself.

What can ID3 contain?

Typical fields include title, artist, album, year, genre, track number, comments and sometimes embedded artwork.

Is metadata part of the audio?

No. ID3 information describes the file. Removing supported tags does not mean editing the actual audio recording.

Why remove MP3 metadata?

You may want a cleaner sharing copy, remove outdated information or reduce unnecessary descriptive data attached to a file.

Keep an original when needed

Metadata can be useful for personal music libraries. Clean a copy instead of discarding information you may want later.

Use MetWipe

Inspect and clean supported metadata locally in your browser. MetWipe is designed so supported file processing can happen on your device rather than requiring an application-server upload.

Why tags and audio need separate checks

A title or artist tag is descriptive text around the audio stream. A player may also derive a label from a filename or its own library. Removing ID3 metadata should not be described as deleting every possible identifier or changing the words in a recording.

A reproducible check

Use a short test recording with a recognizable tag value. Inspect it in a tag editor, clean it and inspect the output in the same editor. Play the audio too; the spoken content should still be reviewed for privacy.

If your goal is removal rather than inspection, use the MP3 metadata remover to clean supported ID3, APEv2 and Lyrics3 structures in a separate copy, then verify that output.
