What Is EXIF Metadata?
EXIF metadata is information stored inside many image files. It can describe when a photo was taken, the device used, camera settings and sometimes precise GPS coordinates.
What information can EXIF contain?
Depending on the image and device, EXIF can include camera or phone model, date and time, orientation, exposure settings, focal length, software information and GPS coordinates. Not every image contains all of these fields.
Why can EXIF be a privacy concern?
A normal-looking photo may contain information that is invisible when viewing the image. GPS coordinates can reveal where it was captured, while timestamps and device details can provide additional context.
Do social networks always remove EXIF?
No. Services process images differently. Some remove most metadata while others may preserve selected information. For sensitive files, inspect the image before sharing instead of relying on a platform to clean it.
Safer sharing workflow
Keep the original separately, inspect the sharing copy, remove unnecessary metadata and verify the cleaned result before publishing.
Use MetWipe
Inspect and clean supported metadata locally in your browser. MetWipe is designed so supported file processing can happen on your device rather than requiring an application-server upload.
